Pure, organic and patent-protected, Defend’s mushroom blend is considered to be the most technologically advanced immune blend for use in dietary supplements on the market today. This 100% USDA certified organic, certified kosher, biotech lab cultivated, full spectrum mushroom blend contains over 200 different immuneactive polysaccharide structures.
They all contain very high levels of polysaccharides, these are large carbohydrate molecules that play different roles in our cells, from building structural walls to acting as storage containers. They also active immune cells, and because we use polysaccharides from six different mushroom products, we activate a broad spectrum of immune cells. In fact, this particular blend activates all 260 classes of immune cells.
Here is a brief summary of each of the six medicinal mushrooms featured in ActiveBlendz Defend:
Agaricus has the ability to increase macrophage activity. Macrophages are a type of white blood cell that absorbs and removed foreign bodies, including microbes, debris, and even cancer cells. When tested, agaricus increased cytotoxic T-lymphocyte activity in tumor-bearing mice, showing not only its role in immunity but also its potential as an aid for cancer treatment
Shiitake isn’t just a delicious mushroom in Asian cuisine. It contains lentinan, a compound that has antifungal effects but has also shown benefits for suppressing the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. It has also shown anti-cancer benefits on colon cancer cells in vitro.
Maitake has received much funding for research since it was approved in 1997 as an Investigational New Drug by the US FDA. Since then, it has been involved in many in vitro and clinical trials. One trial was the ground breaking clinical trial in 2009 conducted at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In this Phase I/II clinical trial, researchers demonstrated conclusively that maitake can enhance the immune systems of breast cancer patients. It does this by activating NK cells as well as other immune system cells, demonstrating its ability to improve both the innate immune system as well as the adaptive immune system. This could have powerful ramifications in cancer treatment, if not directly impacting the proliferation of the cancer itself, but by helping the body naturally ward off secondary infections during cancer treatments.
Coriolus, also called Turkey Tail, promotes cytokine expression, which I mentioned earlier, helping to balance the antibody immunity with cellular immunity. But is has also been shown to selectively promote apoptosis, or programmed cell death, specifically selecting and eliminating leukemia cells and cells that have been treated with chemotherapeutic agents. This mushroom was tested and found to help lesses some fo the side effects from chemotherapy and radiation therapy through the enhancement of the immune system.
Reishi balances the immune system by insuring it is effective when stimulated but not over effective when it does not need to be. Reishi not only contains the powerful beta-glucans that activate immune cells but also has a high concentration of triterpenes, a class of chemical compounds necessary for life. Reishi has been shown to activate macrophages to aid in removing toxins, microbes, and debris from the body as well as increasing interleukins, a specific group of cytokines.
Cordyceps is unique among these mushrooms because it contains a nucleoside not found in the other species known as cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine). This is a derivative of the nucleoside adenosine that plays a crucial role in energy transfer through the ATP pathway. Cordycepin is so similar in structure to natural adenosine that the body has a difficult time differentiating between the two. So when it is faced with cordycepin, the body will incorporate it just as it would adenosine, increasing bio-energy through the ATP pathway. This helps to increase the utilization of oxygen and improve endurance while reducing fatigue in the body. Taken a step further, research has shown these benefits to alleviate symptoms of respiratory illness including bronchitis and asthma.
